هر ساختار نظری در جهت حفظ میراث فرهنگی باید بتواند به سؤال «چگونگی» ادامۀ حیات بناها و محوطه‌های تاریخی پاسخ دهد و از آن‌جایی که مدرنیته بندهای ارتباطی ما با سنت و گذشتۀ خود را قطع کرده، ساختار ارائه‌شدۀ جدید باید تلاشی برای برقراری این ارتباط از دست رفته باشد. به همین دلیل پژوهش پیش‌رو تلاشی است در جهت ارائۀ ساختاری جدید در زمینۀ حفاظت از بناها و بافت‌های تاریخی تا بتوان با کمک آن به این میراث، حیاتی دوباره بخشید. در این پژوهش بیان می‌شود که رویکرد روایتگری چگونه می‌تواند با استفاده از توانایی خود در برقراری ارتباط بین گذشته، حال و آینده، وضعیتی از وجود و ماندگاری را به این میراث اعطا کند که نه‌تنها بتوانند به زندگی خود ادامه دهند، بلکه از نقش خود به‌عنوان عنصری منفعل در جامعه جدا شده و به شخصیتی تأثیرگذار در زمینۀ خود تبدیل شوند و با هویتی مستقل به زیست خود ادامه دهند در حالی‌که هم‌زمان برای حفظ بقاء با «تغییرات» زمانه نیز خود را منطبق می‌کنند. درنهایت بیان می‌شود که استفاده از این رویکرد به‌صورت ساختارمند و یا مکملی در کنار دیگر رویکردها می‌تواند به نتایج پایداری در زمینۀ حفاظت منتهی شود. در همین راستا در پژوهش پیش‌رو رویکرد روایتگری در نوشته‌های افرادی چون پل ریکور، هانس گئورگ گادامر، هایدگر و نایجل والتر کنکاش می‌شود.
